Corpus Christii: Rising
18/12/07 || Kampfar
There are lots of things bearing the name Corpus Christi and the variety of the subjects christened so is varied as a multi-racial gangbang. We have a Texan city, lots of schools and universities, a record label and no less than two American navy vessels, one a frigate and the other a submarine. That frigate thing was in service during WWII so I wouldn’t bet my cock it still floats like a rubber duck, but the submarine is fresh as a thought of child (at least if I have nailed my interpretation of the word: commissioned) as it was commissioned in 2007.
This is not only in context cause of the name but also because the sub will patrol the Algarve coast exclusively. I read so in a Tom Ass Clancy novel.
“Rising” is Corpus Christii’s 6th full-length and the end of a trilogy; one which started out with “Tormented” and was followed by “Tormented again,” a lame and unimaginative title for sure. I didn’t even know this band existed, hardly knew people spent time playing black metal in Portugal, so naturally I don’t know know for certain if “Rising” ends their trilogy befittingly or if they claim to have made one just to appear smart. Though I’m very certain “Rising” sounds pretty much like an ordinary black metal album to me, can’t say I hear even a trace of concept in this shit, besides the usual Satan and Christ blabber, so I put my money on the latter.
Well, shit was an exaggeration, though not a criminal one. Here follows elaboration and a very slight disclaimer.
“Rising” is just too fucking long, and as a start the intro and outro should have been aborted. The intro an annoying church choir praising Lord feces, only to be abruptly cut off by Corpus Christii’s “evil” black metal. Wow, that contrast shit was old in 1990 already. The outro is not a trace better. How many times do we need to hear Feces Christ crucified? Enough already.
Hail Odin, and Tom & Jerry.
I wouldn’t be this pissed if they had kept the filler material to the start and end of the album; much more alarming is the fact that they have like 2 minutes of it in each and every song. “The wanderer” has least of it and is therefore my sole favorite, “Void revelation” being the exact opposite. Download this crapper and you know just what I hate in this album. If you happen to like it, “Rising” might be your album of the year. Damn retard, send me a mail where you explain exactly what you found attractive with the lousy disharmonies this band sports en masse.
Now it’s time for a very slight retraction.
Corpus Christii is not a talentless bunch of cunts, really. They know how to write decent, at times good black metal, they even know how to handle their instruments, but it’s about time they take a collective chill pill. A big fucking blue one. Take a look at their discography and have in mind everything but an obscure demo is released since 2000, then take a listen to “Rising.” I suggest they visit a local wine maker and learn a bit about cultivation. Pay attention, assholes, and you might release a worthwhile album in the future.
“Rising” is a varied album in terms of tempos, it has decent to good vocals, except for the whines, and it doesn’t sound like shit production wise. Except for one small thing. I mean big. Big because it is the fucking disharmonies we are talking about, again. Yes, they have a high placing in the mix, so high that they tickled my ears when I listened to it through my fine, fine Sennheiser headphones. I did so in an attempt to uncover any “hidden” details. Of that I found very little, but the sole attempt was enough to single out the A.I.D.S of “Rising.” After that experience I have had a hard time enjoying the good bits, very hard.
Nice fucking cover art, I dig. Pay heed, this is most likely the first and only time I’ll hand out pure praise to you lot.
If you fancy the idea of a Portuguese (black metal) band sounding like a mediocre to bad Norwegian one, I wholeheartedly recommend “Rising.”
(Oh, almost forgot to mention Corpus Christii sport not only one, but two of Internet’s most useless sites. Congratulations and fuck off.)
4 out of 10.
